Multiple creative problem solving processes have been enunciated by leading management experts . My intention in this section , is to make the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) process userfriendly as well as potent.
The Creative Problem Solving process consists of sequential application of the tools "Problem mapping" (Relations Diagram)and "Mind Mapping".(Affinity Diagram)
Problem mapping(Relations Diagram) enables perception expension regarding the problem and its underlying dynamics , while mind mapping enables the identification of alternative solutions.
Defining the problem is the starting point of any problem solving effort . More often than not , we have always tried to define problems in the form of singular statements. These statements are pale shadows of the problem because the problem is dynamic in character and influenced by multiple factors.
An inadequate perception of the problem automatically translates into inadequate solutions. Conceptualization of the problem along with the interplay of multiple factors that underlie it , is possible through , "Problem Mapping".(Relations Diagram)
In the problem mapping process , we first identify all the elements in the problem followed by mapping of the cause - effect relationship among them. This enables the pictorization of the dynamics that underlie the problem.

Problem:Fall in sales to 60 % of last year's sales
Step 1 : Identifying the elements of the problem.
Step 2 : Mapping the cause-effect among the "Elements of the Problem" , yields the "Problem Map".
E-Brochure:Electronic Brochure of the organization
Step 3: Identification of hit points
The hit points in the "Problem Map" are those points where the "No. of arrows" whether incoming or outgoing are maximum. In the above problem , these are :
| Hit Point | No. of arrows |
|---|---|
| Brand | 8 |
| E-product brochure | 5 |
| E-brochure | 3 |
| Brochure | 3 |
| Presentation | 3 |
| Website | 4 |
Step 4 : Identification of alternative solutions

This process can be continued till all the hit points in the problem map are adequately addressed.
The process of making a mind map is given below.

The sequential application of the tools " Problem mapping" and "Mind mapping" makes the "Creative Problem solving process" user friendly as well as potent.
The problem mapping tool induces perception expansion regarding the problem and its underlying dynamics. It enables the identification of the point(s) which can be leveraged to resolve the problem. Problem mapping also catalyses the generation of alternative solutions.
The utility of the tool , "Mind mapping" for addressing each of the hit points identified through problem mapping , enables the generation of alternative action points.
The subsequent solution set selected is therefore balanced and potent.
