Why Training ?

Any trainer faces this question from others as well as from his / her innerself. What is the purpose ? Is it of any use?Is it worth it ?

If the trainer believes that there is enormous value in training , the belief must be based on hard fact or clear observable difference created by a training input. A belief in training without this data is blind and is likely to be easily toppled by a few powerful arguments.

The impact of training or the lack of it , is visible all around us. I have been delighted by the large anti war demonstrations in some countries . This orientation is the result of learning that these people have gone through. The impact is visible in terms of receding war clouds. The credit for such an achievement goes to not only the protesters themselves but also the trainers in their life starting from their parents , teachers , movie directors ,writers or even script writers. The important thing to note is that these people protested against an event in which they are not the affected party.

Conversely , in our culture , we seem to protest only when we are affected. It indicates a gross shortage of training competence across the entire training spectrum starting from nursery to Leadership development programs for the top management of organizations.Just yesterday I noticed a person, who was about to be challaned by a cop , touching the knees of the cop to not to do his challan. A lack of self respect is a training failure and such instances are common around us. A democrtatic country consisting of people who don't respect themselves and who only wake up from slumber when they themselves are adversely affected, indicates gross training failure.

Why is this happening?Perhaps our perspectives as trainers are skewed. We as trainers , have defined ourselves , too , narrowly . In schools , we develop the competence of children in the areas of writing, communicating , general knowledge and mathematical ability. So , the child would be able to write, speak, calculate and in addition to being aware of who the president of India is. What about the ability to distinguish between right and wrong ; waht about direction in life ; what about the development of the instinct of sharing and for fighting for what is right ;what about the instinct towards self respect;what about the instinct towards freedom say freedom of expression.Though freedom of expression is enshrined in our constitution , there are few among us , who are able to stand up for what we think is right. Most of the people grovel in front of power.

This indicates a shortcoming of the trainers as well as the training processes that the people have been exposed to during their lifetimes. No wonder there are few students who aspire to be enterpreneurs. Aspiration for jobs where one does not have to stretch oneself to achieve in addition to unaccountable exercise of power , is high.

We need to shift our perspective from the development of purely functional competencies to behavioural competencies , lifestyle development, perception expansion , as well as orientation development.

The entire"Bhagwat Gita" , is focussed on developing orientation. Look at the impact. The entire functional competence of Arjun is zilch without the distinction between right and wrong. In fact without orientation, functional competence can create negative results.

Why is there a rising incidence of children of well to do families , taking to crime?

Too much focus on the development of functional competencies and their assesment through exams.Too little or no focus on orientation and lifestyle development.

Lifestyle development is rarely explored in the training perspective . The impact is visible for all of us to see . Obesity is becoming the most serious disease of the modern world. The multiplicative impact being blood pressure, hypertension and diabetes.

We as trainers have not synthesized , the key parameters of wholistic development. We have trapped ourselves into thinking about functional competence only.

The result is a severe shortage of personnel who fight for causes ; who aspire for the stars ; who can stare an exploiter in the eyes and who respect themselves enough to not grovel in front of positions of power.
